NewYork Presbyterian's Choosing Healthy and Active Lifestyles for Kids (CHALK) is a collaboration between Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and the community of Northern Manhattan. The goal of CHALK is to educe the prevalence of childhood obesity in Northern Manhattan and create a wellness environment where healthy lifestyles are integral to all children and their families. We partner with schools, early childhood centers, faith based organizations, and community organizations throughout Washington Heights and Inwood.

The cornerstone of our work features the 10 Habits of Healthy Kids promoting healthy behavior through small changes that can be adopted and add up to a healthy lifestyle.

  • January: Be physically active everyday
  • February: Eat plenty of vegetables and some fruit every day
  • March: Switch to low-fat (1% or less) milk, cheese, and yogurt
  • April: Get enough sleep and eat breakfast
  • May: Do something every day that makes you feel good
  • June: Drink water instead of soda or juice
  • July: Live your life!
  • August: Add some green to la bandera
  • September: Turn off the screens and live your life!
  • October: November: Eat smaller amounts
  • December: Eat less fast food

We showcase these habits through a yearly calendar distributed to all of our partners. To make a complete calendar we have added two additional habits, “Live your Life” and ”Add green to la bandera.”  In the past, we’ve taken pictures of our partners in action or used a youth community artist to illustrate each habit. This year, we would like to feature a local artist's illustrations that represent the 10 healthy habits.

  • October 16 @ 5pm: Submission deadline
  • October 23: Selected artist will be notified
